Hello. I just moved to my new place here in Osdorp, Amsterdam, and found out that there is no such thing as a competition among internet providers. And if you don't want DSL internet (for some reason I don't want it), there is no competiton at all - just Ziggo. Okay...

Ziggo offers coax link. I did a quick research and found out that it's common in Amsterdam. So I can forget about connecting my desktop PC (which I use as a server) directly to the provider's cable.

I've got Technicolor TC7200.U router, which has integrated Ethernet-switch. Will I be able to control it? Does Ziggo provide customers with credentials to get into its administratioin console? I need to fine-tune some things, enable Wi-Fi clients whitelisting, check for firmware update etc.

And, speaking of internet-facing servers at home (I so used to it back in my previous country), to make configuration hassle-free, I need a "white" IP address (not a dynamic one). Ziggo representative told me that's impossible.

Is it common in Amsterdam? Most of providers don't sell white IPs?

For some reason I thought that Amsterdam has a world-class Internet here, and it has, but seemingly only in datacenters. At home, it's expensive, complicated and feature-less. Frustrating, but, hey!.. I'm finally in the Netherlands after all.

Ziggo can put your modem in bridge.
Behind your modem you can place your own router and your router will receive an open external IP address, so you are responsible four your own firewall.
Ziggo only has dynamic IP addresses, no static, but you can take a DynDNS to always reach your changed IP address from outside. I used this for 10 years and it worked well.

But there is Ziggo business, they have Pro, where you have 5 fixed IP adresses.

Ah, this is what I want exactly, so the modem will behave just as a modem, without any excessive functionality (routing, Wi-Fi etc). And I don't have to control it and keep an eye on firmware updates. That's good.

I set up DynDNS 10 years ago or like and it worked, and I never thought that I will return back to it. But it's still better than nothing.

Tip, I think you know this for a long time, but anyway or for others who read this topic:

Choose your router carefully, because there are many different, with many different functions.
Read the technical possibilities and choose the one that suits you best.

Any questions, on this customer helps customer forum, there are a lot of people with different technical backgrounds and and experienced users.

If you have a question we don't know exactly, there are Ziggo moderators, they come by every few business days in every topic to see if they can help with there background information.
They can look deep in the system to see if there are any issues or solutions.

Yeah, I'm very serious when it's needed to choose a proper hardware, that's why my router is in fact a regular PC powered by Debian, with Shorewall, hostapd, RAID and stuff like that. So this setup definitely suits me best and all I need is a decent Ethernet connection. And hopefully I will get one.

Only LAN 1 on your modem is working now and you get a external IP adres on your Debian.

As Bert correctly stated, static IP's are an option in certain business subscriptions, but not on the consumer side.
However, you could also use your hostname. That will stay the same even when your IP changes. Find it though www.watismijnip.nl (other websites are available ;)).

I finally found some time to post back. I received my Ziggo Box (modem/router), asked client service to assign me with an IPv4 address (this is a requirement for the bridge mode), and after that I was able to switch the box to the bridge mode. So far so good, and now I have an external IP assigned to my own server.
By the way, seems like the IP is quite static, since it never changed. Ziggo Box was switched off number of times, but IP stayed the same. Perfect.
I asked a colleague of mine, who is also a Ziggo user, and he told me that his IP also never changed.

Great, but this is no guarantee. For instance, if we perform maintenance on your CMTS everyone connected to that CMTS will get a fresh start and (99,999% likely) a new IP address. Let's hope that doesn't happen too often in your area. 😉

Nice to know. Let's see how often this kind of maintenance will happen in my area. If it's once in a year, I'd be more than okay. Just don't want to mess around with DynDNS now.

In most of Osdorp there is also fiber-to-the-home available, which gives you a selection of several ISP options. And you may be able to get 200/30 service via VDSL+ from KPN depending on your address.

However, since you are already on Ziggo, you might as well see if you can make it work for you. With bridge mode and IPv4 you can often keep the same IP address for 6 months or longer.

FYI I don't think many people would understand the term "white IP". I've worked in networking for almost 30 years and this is the first time I've seen it.

I have Ziggo for over 10 years. If you don't factory reset your modem, or install new firmware on your router (not the upgrades) the IP stays the same for years normally. But no guarantees.
