Which coax cable to use for the technicolor modem?

Dear All,

My appologies for not writing you in Dutch.

I have moved to a new house where it would look a bit better if I moved the modem into a small storage on the same floor. However, I´d need a longer coax cable for that.

So I bought this one:

But it does not fit on the modem(router) - it seems to be missing 1 mm in the diameter. Could someone please advise me on which specs to look for when buying a coax cable?

Thanks!

@HondaTom
You need one with a F-connector on one side (modem). You better modify the cable you bought. F-connectors aren't that expensive.

**EDIT**
A “normal” TV/radio cable has CAI connectors.
There are male and female F-connectors and CAI-connectors!
There are also F-to- CAI-adapters. (Verloopadapter)

Since the one you bought has a male CAI connector one end and a female one on the other end our could (it’s ill-advised but what the heck) use it to extend the cable Ziggo provided.

Thanks! So, just to be sure.. whats the name of the connector which needs to be at the other end of it? Are there adapters from what´s on my current cable to F-connector?

The connectors on the other end are mosty called: "IEC (UHF, coax) plug > IEC (UHF, coax) jack" (instead of CAI).
You probily need the female IEC (UHF, coax) jack. Try if female plug from de the cable you already bought fits the wallsocket you have. That cable has IEC connectors!
The male plug , on that cable, fits the plug (with the green marking) on the cable Ziggo provided. So you could use yur new cable as an extention cord. The power losses will be minimall (when using good quality cable and connectors).

Just a headsup

Do keep in mind that the modem should normally be connected with the short coax cable at the point where the Ziggo signal is coming into your house. The reason for that is to ensure the modem is getting a good signal for optimal performance. If you extend the coax cable this will mean your modem will be getting less signal and this may influence your internet connection.

Thanks for all your answers! Yes, I know about the advise for the cable length. I do find it a bit strange though, as you´d have no signal loss at 100 m on a cat5e cable, but ziggo techs already consider 10 m of coax cable problematic. Why would that be? Is coax cable so awfully badly shielded?

Anyway, not a big deal for me if I get 350 or 250 mbit (out of the 500 I theoretically should have delivered).

Although coaxial cable looks very simple, i.e. only two conductors separated by some insulation (this may theoretically also be air but is not always practical), it is a complex system. In addition to the fact that the two conductors have some resistance, they are also inductors (at the higher frequencies) and, in conjunction with the insulation, also form a capacitor!
